I am just a little speck emerging from a subplot, a nicety who is ready to become your protagonist

Was that you in passing? A glance with a fleeting thought; an inconclusive glimpse of you lingering in the subconscious.

My reader never needs a charge;

its infinite battery life takes me far.

Being always on and ready for use,

never crashing or needing a reboot.

I really shouldn’t brag about all it be,

but it’s also rights management free.

My reader is cross-platform compatible;

all hands and eyes are able to maneuver.

Reading one that evolved from poetics,

or a creative endeavour that animates.

With its texture ambience that’s handy,

always ready to fuel a delightful fantasy.

My reader has fantastic features to tell,

like new models with “new book smell”.

It holds my place anytime I put it down,

sometimes using the flaps of a hound.

Cooking up ideas bred in the nursery,

filling up my mind anytime I’m hungry.

My reader will work in twenty years for you,

or thousands as the technology holds true.

It helps make sense of all the sublime,

opening imagination’s access to any time.

A lasting trip building its own odyssey,

what influence available for all to see.

As happy as some poor bastards will be all day

As happy as some poor bastards will be all day

On this eve of Groundhog Day, like every Groundhog Day Eve, the though rushes over me: what if this is the year I get stuck in the infinite loop of Groundhog Day? Will I lose my marbles for a bit like Phil did? Will I go through that naughty phase? Will I come out of Groundhog Day less of an ahole? Will I finally win over the girl of my dreams and live happily ever after? So many questions…

Such talk about virtual reality and the future; such science-fiction fantasy of somehow being immersed in a make-believe world, experiencing an illusion or living a dream. The holy grail of which for some being the aspiration to construct some sort of holodeck: a magical room that transforms into whatever pretend reality one’s heart desires. It does sound ridiculous, really, that idea of simply loading a program that then instantly transforms a room into an alternate imaginary existence.

No, actually, on second thought, this isn’t far fetched at all. In fact, this technology has existed for as long as I can remember, and long before my time even. Yes, it turns out any room can be transformed into a holodeck and take me into a virtual reality with the simple loading of a program: a book. Books take me to another world, a vivid imaginary world that exposes me to the best kind of virtual reality around: the kind generated by the power of my own imagination.

Writing creates a virtual reality for me too. Indeed, this is where I write my own program for the holodeck, designing and building my own dreamed-up world. Heed my warning though, if your imagination is like mine, because it is easy to get carried away with such fantasy, exploring a range of curiosities and satisfying desires, dreaming of different adventures and experiences, getting caught up trying out these alternate virtual realities. But at the same time, that’s actually the best part, and is maybe why it’s so addictive.

It’s true we haven’t spent much time together lately. It’s not that I don’t think of you, because I do, constantly. I’m often filled with the best intentions to come see you, to come spend some quality time. Don’t hold it against me; I’ve just been soooo busy. Yes, that’s a weak excuse. And I know it only seems like I get serious and sentimental about us around the holidays. But I am committed, no question, I am definitely still committed to continuing with my gym membership.

My merry Christmas to you!
I shot this tree all lit up in the Lost Lagoon a couple nights ago just after sunset.

Lately, the thought of changing fields and driving my career in a new direction has persisted with such appeal; whether the curiosity for something new, or maybe the thrill of such an untapped and lucrative opportunity (once some venture capitalists provide the seed money). The best part is the level of enthusiasm and eagerness to engage held by the key target market: oppressed political and exiled royalty willing to pay substantial commissions for help transferring their riches out of Nigeria.
